Subject: Reading Thames Valley polis becoming squat-friendly??????

Thames Valley Police appear to have a "standard" policy for dealing with
squatters, and you may be shocked with how tolerant it has become!

They are visited first by a Burglary Squad CID officer and a "bobby"
[sometimes in video-equipped plain cars]. These officers just look over
the place, tell them they are taking no further action against the occupants
re squatting [a civil matter] but will notify the owner the place has been
unlawfully occupied. They then *count* the occupants, and notify the Royal
Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service - they tell the occupants they do this
as "squats sometimes catch on fire and we wouldn't want people to get left
behind if they were evacuated". [I think this may be standard procedure
when old bill visit multiple occupancy buldiings in my area anyway]

Of course the CID is there so if people like smackheads wanted for
burglaries elsewhere , robberies or shoplifting are hiding in squats they
get nicked as usual, but TVP seem to be really being pragmatic here and
*are* making a distinction between the dysfunctional scum who are heroin
addicts, thieves etc and just bust in anywhere to cluck for a bit before
their next robbery to get their 10 bag [I think this is called
skippering?] and decent squatters many of whom have jobs!

As the time in the squat progresses, the squat may be visited on one or
more occasions by an "area beat officer". This is the local village bobby type,
who usually gives the usual schoolmaster type lecture about "don't make
too much noise and piss off the neighbours", "don't burn the place down or
smash it", and [this may *really* surprise you] "if the locals decide to take
matters into their own hands and hassle you, call 999 and *we* will come
down and help you out and keep order!"

But the visit is friendly and no different to the one you normally get
from an ABO if you move into a new area and he or she clocks a new face in the
area.......

Although it *does* seem the polis are notifying the owners [like they
would if burglar alarm set off etc] and perhaps this means evictions happen
sooner, the negotiations are *so* good natured [compared to what I have
noticed previously or how I am told London is going down] I am amazed by
how things have changed!

the last bunch of cops even looked at the bicycle workshop, and once they
ascertained the bikes were NOT stolen [mostly donated or picked up from
abandoned cycles] they said "why thats a good idea, gets all the old
frames off the streets and is constructive" [one was a cyclist himself so that
may have even skewed things a bit]

I don't know what has caused this change of attitude, it was only two
years ago the same cops thought we were "scum who stole peoples homes and shit
in doorways etc" - I guess they are *taking* all the drugs they confiscate
off ravers that they don't officially nick you for now under the "stealth
decriminalisation" rules - or maybe the cops themselves are so fucked off
by the lack of housing in Reading [it is actually very hard to get a first
home on a constables' salary] they are thinking "fair play to the squatters!"

Is it just Reading which has become like this?
